You’re working on upgrading Dynamics GP from GP 2010 to GP 2016, and have successfully installed Dynamics GP 2016 R2 and SQL Server 2016. You go to install Management Reporter 2012 CU 15, however, you get this error message:

Management reporter 2012

“Couldn’t retrieve the list of available databases: the connection attempt failed.”

What do you do and what causes this error?

After coming across this error message during a Dynamics GP 2016 upgrade, I noticed this only happens if Dynamics GP 2016 is already installed on the server. The error comes about due to Dexterity Shared Components. When Dynamics GP 2016 is installed, the program installs Dexterity Shared Components Version 16. However, Management Report 2012 works with a lower version of Dexterity Shared Components. If Dynamics GP 2016 is already installed, Management report does not install the Dexterity Shared Components version is requires due to the presence of the version installed by Dynamics GP 2016.

To solve this issue, close Management Reporter Configuration console and manually install the Dynamics GP 2013 Dexterity Shared Components version 12.

Go to: MDGP2013_R2_DVD_ENUS\MDGP2013_R2_ENUS\Tools\Dex

Dexterity Shared Components version 12

After the correct version of Dexterity Shared Components is installed, you will be able to proceed with management reporter configuration with no error. It really works! As always, let us know if you have any questions or feedback!
